DISH Intros New DVR Options
DISH Network on Tuesday took the wraps off a new software upgrfeature that will allow users to convert their ViP211 and ViP211k HD tuners into fully functioning digital video recorders.

The EchoStar-developed technology will work with any off-the-shelf external hard drive (in sizes ranging from 50GB to 750GB), DISH said, and includes a nine-day program guide, VOD capabilities and DVR functionality for both the satellite connection and the built-in OTA tuner. The featured is expected to go live by the end of the month.

“As a leader in high definition, DISH Network continues to expand its HD solutions for our customers, including finding innovative ways to take our existing technology to the next level,” said Jessica Insalaco, DISH Network’s chief marketing officer. “Now customers ready to add in the benefits of DVR recording to their HD receiver can do so with ease, simply by plugging in an off-the-shelf external hard drive.”

Subscribers will have to pay a $39.99 activation fee to get started, the provider said, and will be responsible for purchasing their own hardware.
